Oak Hill
Oak Hill was founded in 1893 as The Connecticut Institute for the Blind. Over the past 128 years, we’ve grown from a small school for children with blindness or visual impairments to serving as Connecticut’s largest private provider of services for people with all types of disabilities.
Oak Hill supports people with disabilities across their full lifespan, in all aspects of their lives. We offer community-based programs including housing, employment training, education, assistive technology, healthy relationship support, sports and fitness, art therapy, and recreation for children and adults with multiple disabilities. Through our programs, we work together with the people we serve, supporting them in achieving their full potential.
Mission statement: Oak Hill sets the standard, partnering with people with disabilities, to provide services and solutions promoting independence, education, health, and dignity.

NEAT’s evolution of services
Services include targeted Assistive Technology (AT) and Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) services for individuals across the lifespan. Some exciting offerings include:
- A Smart Home on Wheels (SHOW) travels to events and provides demonstrations of impactful smart technology to individuals with disabilities or those in the aging community who’d like to increase their independence and allow them to remain in their homes as they age.
- Video Game Accessibility Assessments provides people of all ages with the opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful recreational opportunities that are traditionally inaccessible.
- Our Adaptive Equipment Reuse Program accepts gently used, durable medical equipment donations from the community. This equipments is then refurbished, repaired, and sanitized and sold to customers for less than half of what it would cost brand new.
- An annual NEAT Membership provides individuals and organizations with access to NEAT’s AT and AAC Specialists for resourceful information through Pop-up Consultations, Webinar learning opportunities, as well as an AT Lending Library to help individuals make informed decisions before buying devices.
NEAT Pop-up Consultations
A monthly availability calendar is presented to NEAT members so they can sign up for one-hour virtual AT consultations with AT and AAC Specialists who offer unique areas of expertise (i.e., Blind/Low Vision, Communication, SLD/Dyslexias, etc.). This consultation can be flexible in its purpose to meet the desired needs of the member, supporting the need for quick access to information or troubleshooting that does not warrant a more formal request. This offering allows a low time commitment with the ability to pick a convenient date/time and receive immediate support with minimal paperwork.
*Note: Pop-up Consultations do not allow for direct service to an individual with a disability as that would require written consent and would be considered a formal AT service scheduled through the NEAT Referral Process.
